Dear Parents and Students,
We are facing the spring homestretch of the school year at WB and excited for the prospects of a successful finish! We have been emphasizing the importance of using student data to guide instruction and all decisions we make. We are also discovering how powerful this data can be when shared with students. As you walk through our hallways and classrooms, you will see many data walls or boards where students can see where they are in terms of their learning. These boards show student progress in relation to weekly formative assessments or tests as well as on the quarterly benchmark assessments. We encourage you to ask your student how he or she is doing on these tests. We also remind you to log on to Family Link on the district website to track your student’s academic progress. Finally, please stay in regular contact with your student’s teacher and visit school whenever possible.
The district Science Festival will be held at Poston Butte High School on March 4, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We would like to invite you to see our campus submissions for this event that night. Our students and teachers have been working hard to promote the application of science and technology.
We are excited about consolidating the Johnson Ranch K-2 campus and the WB 3-8 campus into one next year. We feel that this will improve communication and cooperation and thus have a positive effect on student learning. Room and teaching assignments are being reviewed and planned so that the transition will be a smooth one for students.
Free all-day kindergarten will be back next school year! At the most recent FUSD Governing Board meeting, our board voted to provide free all-day kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year. This change will favorably impact student learning and help our kindergarten students be better prepared for the rigors of first grade and subsequent years.
In closing, we are also working to help our students reach their full potential as future citizens through the Olweus anti-bullying program and other efforts. Olweus is a proven international program in conjunction with ASU and Pinal County to teach student how to recognize and prevent bullying as well as what to do about it when they witness it. We are also investigating Steven R. Covey’s “The Leader in Me” school effort designed to teach student the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People and how to apply the same in their lives and at school.
We feel privileged to work with your students and are keenly aware of the trust and responsibility that is ours in working with tomorrow’s leaders.
